Creative Drama Activities

Enthusiastic parental participation is what makes these activities really fun for kids but, Kids, you can handle these ideas on your own, as well.

ACTING:

After reading the first part of the book, the bossiness of Deli with her brothers is a good chapter to act out.  Each person decides who they want to be.  If two people want to be the same animal, act out the scene several times changing parts.

(Sibling relationships often benefit from children and adults pretending to be someone other than themselves.  Walking in the other person’s shoes so to speak.)

Deli’s encounter with the forest creatures can be fun and exciting to act out because of the other animals involved.  “What if” scenarios might be tried after acting the story line.  For examples: What if the forest encounter had not been a dream?  What would happen if the snake ate Deli?  (I know.  Short book!)  Have you experienced a fearful situation to share?

Act out the scene with Lily visiting Deli in the chapter called, The Visit.  What would happen if Lily argued with Deli?  Act out the scene with different endings.  How should we treat our friends to remain friends?

Choose animals not in the book and pretend to be those creatures meeting bossy little Deli for the first time.  The encounter might be scary, happy, curious, or funny.

Charades is both a creative dramatics activity and a game.  Scenes and characters both can be pantomimed (acting without words) for other people to guess.  This can be done in teams or with just two individuals.

NOTE:  Get the family involved.  With a little ingenuity, many of the bossy mouse’s adventures are easily adapted to “performance” for families.  Children are natural actors and actresses.  Parents, let your kids decide what they want to act out and who they want to be and who they want you to be.  Show your offspring your sunny, funny side.
